Which feeding tube size suits a newborn?
That is a clinical decision for the health worker placing the tube. It depends on the baby’s weight and the feeding plan. Newborn units usually keep every infant feeding tube size from 5FG to 8FG so the right one is always there.
The colour coded luer mount helps staff tell the sizes apart at a glance: 5FG grey, 6FG light green, 7FG white and 8FG.
What does FG mean on a feeding tube?
FG is the French gauge. It measures the outside diameter of the tube and three French units equal one millimetre. A 5FG infant feeding tube is narrower than an 8FG.
All four Sternmed sizes are the same 50 cm length. Only the diameter changes. The colour on the luer mount tells staff which FG they are holding without reading the pack.

How the tube is used
Feeding tubes for babies and children must be placed by trained health workers. Tube size, placement checks and feeding plans are clinical decisions. Follow your facility protocol and the doctor’s orders.
The radio opaque strip helps staff confirm the position on X ray. Small and preterm babies often need tube feeding and the World Health Organization fact sheet on preterm birth explains why that care matters.
Who orders the infant feeding tube
Newborn units and paediatric wards order it. So do maternity hospitals, children’s clinics and hospital pharmacies.
